Rotation Policy
Students perform a minimum of three rotations with program faculty prior to selecting their laboratories for thesis research. At least one rotation must be performed at UCSD and one at the Burnham Institute. If a student wishes to rotate with a faculty member outside the program, they may do so as an additional forth rotation, which they can schedule during the third or forth rotation slots. The first two rotations must be performed with program faculty at UCSD or The Burnham Institute. Students may petition the Program Director for consideration of exemptions to this policy.
Rotations comprise 6 to 10 week research experiences in laboratories whose research focus is appealing to the student. The type and scope of research projects performed during a rotation varies among laboratories, and is discussed between the student and the laboratory principal investigator prior to the start of the rotation. Students are recommended to contact a variety of investigators performing research in topics of interest, to schedule an appointment to discuss a possible rotation and to identify the types of open projects in the laboratory, and to make their final decisions as to which laboratories to rotate in based on their conversations with the laboratories principal investigator.
