Clinical Case Conferences
Tumor Board: In this conference, clinical presentation, pathologic and radiologic findings and treatment options for specific patients with all types of cancer are discussed. Patients include those with interesting or diagnostically challenging tumors, difficult management decisions or possible eligibility for experimental treatment protocols. Participants include surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, residents, students, fellows. Patients present with a broad range of stages and types of cancer such as colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, unusual skin cancers, bone or soft tissue tumors, lung tumors etc. Meets at Hillcrest Hospital on the 14 head microscope. Telecast in the Thorton Conference Room. Generally attended by Surgical Pathology faculty and fellows. Students in the Molecular Pathology graduate program may attend, with permission.
Neonatal/Pediatric Pathology Conference: In this conference, clinical findings of perinatal diseases and problems are correlated with anatomic findings in the placenta or autopsy. A spectrum of diseases is evaluated, including metabolic, genetic, and developmental disorders. Participants include pathologists, residents, fellows, perinatologists, pediatricians, and radiologists. Students in the Molecular Pathology graduate program may attend, with permission of the conference organizer, Dr. Elizer Masliah.
Multidisciplinary Breast Conference: In this conference, clinical presentation, pathologic and radiologic findings and treatment options for all individual patients with breast cancer are discussed. There is also a focus on medical genetics, and half a conference a month discusses molecular mechanisms. Participants include surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, geneticists, residents, students, and fellows. Students in the Molecular Pathology graduate program may attend, with permission of the conference organizer. Staff from the Medical Genetics Core are also present.
Neuropathology 'Brain-cutting' Conference: In this conference, anatomic findings in the brains of patients who have been autopsied are identified and correlated with other anatomic and clinical findings. Diseases include malformations, tumors, neuroanatomy, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. Participants include neuropathologists, residents, and fellows. Students in the Molecular Pathology graduate program may attend, with permission of the conference organizer, Dr. Larry Hanson
Infectious Disease Conference: Discussions of patient presentation with various infectious diseases and proposed treatments. This conference alternates between the Hillcrest Hospital and the VA hospital. Participants include microbiology faculty, residents, and fellows. Students in the Molecular Pathology graduate program may attend, with permission of the conference organizer, Dr. Sharon Reed.
Surgical Pathology/Biopsy Conferences: These working conferences
combine real time review of pathology cases and clinical care with
didactic content. During these conferences, held at a multi-head
microscope, current biopsies or surgical resections are presented in
conjunction with clinical and radiographic findings. The conferences
provide a working forum for discussion of difficult cases in order to
arrive at a diagnosis including the use of special stains or molecular
diagnostic techniques, discussion of pathophysiology as it relates to
the case and discussion of standard or clinical trial treatment
protocols. The conferences include the General Surgical Pathology
Working Conference (general surgical pathology), Head and Neck Pathology
Conference, Pulmonary Surgical Pathology Conference, Gastrointestinal
Pathology Conference, Hepatopathology Conference, Genitourinary
Pathology Conference and other subspecialty conferences.
